TARGET HOUSE, BLDG. T-828

This photograph(1.), of Building T828, was taken while I was an affiliate artist(‘14-’16) at Headlands. T828(also referred to as the Target House) was located in Rodeo Valley, just off the road as you head west on Bunker Road. What started as a simple interest in the photographic narrative of the lone Target House within the vastness of the alley, turned into a meditation on ritual, change, and ultimately, loss. The first picture I took was of the Target House and a large ccypress tree behind it. Over the course of years, the narrative changed. First the cypress tree was cut down along with 7 others. Deemed invasive and harmful to the endangered Mission Blue Butterflies’ habitat, they needed to be removed. The result was the building being left alone in the frame. Then in October of 2018 a suspected arsonist burnt down the building, leaving nothing but a pile of burnt remains. The person responsible was never found. This piece(5.) is from the middle of the series, shortly before it was burned down(11.), the blue shape fills the void of where the cyprus once stood. Once the site of a United States Army shooting range, building T828 was one of the last remaining structures associated with the historic Fort Barry rifle and pistol range in the park.
